Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
"Remaining Steadfast In Turbulent Times" I Corinthians 15:58
|
|

Pastor Dennis G. Dunn
1994 to present |
On March 2, 1959,
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church was organized at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Napoleon where several worship services were subsequently held.
Approximately 35 people attended the first meeting.
Two of the founders, Mother Ruby Hooker
and Deacon Robert Shields are still active in the church today. The first
pastor of Fellowship was Rev. V.J. Lawhorn and under his leadership, land
was purchased at the corner of
Edith Blvd. and Miles Road SE in Albuquerque, NM.
In, 1965, the State of New Mexico
bought part of the proposed church site property to widen Miles Road and
changed the name of the street to Gibson Blvd. With the funds from this
transaction, the balance on the remaining parcel of land was
paid in full. |
|
Between 1969 and 1976, the remaining
parcel of land on Edith Blvd, was sold because the land was too small to
erect a church building. Two
lots on Miles Road SE were purchased. The FIRST church was built at 2418
Miles Road SE.
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
along with a group of other churches constructed an apartment complex named
the Cox Estates.
|
|
Between 1976 and 1979, the church's
mortgage was paid off, the Cox Estates was sold, and
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
received a part of the
proceeds. During the period of 1979 and 1986, a prison ministry was
initiated in Los Lunas and Santa
Fe Prisons. A church van was purchased for the expanding ministry in and
around the Fellowship
neighborhood.
|
|
Between 1988 and 1992, property
at 1601-1607 Broadway SE was purchased where
church members prepared and
served meals to the homeless for several months. Later a church parsonage
was purchased. The church on
Miles Road was sold and the church at 515 Ash Street was purchased.
|
|
On May 15, 1994,
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
named Pastor Dennis G. Dunn as the tenth pastor since March 1959. A new
church motto was launched, "Church
Without Walls Going In A New Direction."
Within a very short time,
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
began to experience phenomenal growth under Pastor Dunn’s' leadership.
Assuming his new leadership with
just over one hundred members on the roll, the church has grown to over nine
hundred members in just over eight years.
Fellowship recently has been named as
the largest African American
Church in New Mexico. The church has launched over eighteen ministries that
teach and instruct spiritual
bodybuilding for growth. Some of the new ministries include the Young
Adults (18-40), Men and Women's
Ministries, New Members Orientation Program, Marriage Ministry, Children's
Church; Teen Ministry; Faith
Ministry; and "The Kerygma" (the church's
newsletter). The property on Broadway was sold at a profit and
the Allie Shaw Module was added for
additional classroom space. Additionally, many improvements were made to
the Ash Street property.
|
|
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
now celebrates one of God's many blessings upon us, as we exodus 515 Ash, we
shall remember the past. As we
enter into 8550 Saul Bell sanctuary, we shall embrace the present. We come
together to anticipate our
future. As the membership continues to grow spiritually, both in personal
relationships with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in Christian
relationship with one another, we shall marvel at what God is doing in
our lives and our ministry.
